Work of a construction general contractor is not confined to usual stuff like building houses, roads, dwellings, workstations and bridges only. The work starts with the preparation of the site and needful modification of the current position of the site to make it suitable for the construction of desired buildings. The regular supervision, maintenance and remodeling of the present structure is also under their domain.

The construction industry as a whole has different segments for the engagement of different kinds of contractors. Construction general contractor looks after the construction of roads, highways, tunnels, sewers, bridges and so on, which are the main arteries of the infrastructure of a state or the nation. A contractor from this category is well experienced in one segment of the construction engineering like making of buildings for residential purpose or in making roads, highways and bridges and so on.

When a large national project is undertaken by a construction general contractor, he takes the total responsibility of the completion of the entire project and thereby appoints several sub- contractors to work in other segments. Alternatively, the large projects are divided into smaller segments and awarded to different contractors according to their specialization.

Generally, the construction general contractor would like to accept only the portion of the construction responsibility of the particular segment, which matches his expertise so that it can be completed with immaculate supervision and skill available with the contractor for satisfactory outcome. However, the work of remodeling or repair is done by sub-contractors, who are chosen by the construction general contractor on their previous record of performance.
